BREAKING: ‘Rat run’ likely to close for several weeks following appearance of six-metre sinkhole

A SINKHOLE has appeared in Manchester being the third in a year following pits emerging in the Northern Quarter in April and on Mancunian Way in July

The six-metre gap appeared in the middle of Heywood Road, in Prestwich, in the early hours of Monday morning, October 17.

It is understood that resurfacing work was recently carried out along the road.

A spokesperson for United Utilities said the gap, which opened up between the A665 Bury Old Road and Gleblands Road, is likely to cause partial closures in both directions for several weeks while the damage is repaired.

“At this stage we are not sure what has happened and whether the road has collapsed or if it’s linked to a sewer. There has been some recent tarmacing on the road we believe.

“The road has been closed for around half a mile and local traffic diversions are in place.”

A half-mile long corden has been put along the road and motorists have been advised to avoid the area while repairs are in place.

GMP Whitefield have warned drivers of the closure on Twitter, suggesting they give the route a miss for at least a week:
