BREAKING: Armed robbery at a Shaw bank in Oldham

AN ARMED robbery has reportedly taken place today after a cash transit van was targeted at a bank in Shaw. 

The attempted robbery reportedly happened at 2pm today after a cash-in-transit van was targeted at Barclays Bank on Market Street, Shaw.

A suspected getaway vehicle has been spotted on fire on Refuge Street, a few hundred yards away from the bank.

Witnesses have also described smoke coming from the bank itself and armed police are at the scene.

Posting the videos on Facebook, Oldham News and Media commented: “This the vehicle used in the armed robbery, at Shaw.

“The van was initially further up near the fence but during the fire the parking brake failed and it rolled down to its current position whist ablaze, and caused damage to the plastic guttering on the adjacent house and also damaged the windows of the property.”

People have taken to social media to comment on the incident.

Liberal Democrat Parish Councillor for Shaw & Crompton Parish Council, Paul Turner tweeted that armed police were on the street after a getaway car had set on fire and left nearby.

Another person added: “Hope that the security guard is ok after today’s attempted robbery in Shaw town centre.”

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: “We were called to Barclays Bank on Market Street at 2:05pm today.

“A cash-in-transit van driver was approached by two men, who fled with what is being described as a large amount of cash.

“The van was found abandoned and set alight.”
