West Didsbury and Chorlton FC have struggled so far this season in the North West Counties Football League but are hopeful that their new signing John Sergeant can help save the clubs season.

At the weekend, they suffered a 4-1 defeat to Barnoldswick Town and their midweek fixture against Northwich Victoria ended in a 2-1 loss.

Steve Settle said, “I’m gutted really, we just can’t find a win at the minute. It’s really challenging conditions and the pitch is very heavy.”

The local side have struggled most recently having their fixture last night postponed against AFC Darwen due to the pitch being in an ‘unplayable state’. Rain and the freezing temperatures have been one of the key factors that haven’t played in West Dids’ favour. The fixture will be rearranged in due course.

They maybe currently 16th in the league table but manager Steve Settle is hoping that their most recent signing of Gibraltar international, John Sergeant, will help them move forward

Steve Settle explains, “He’s played in the last four game and he’s got better with each game. “He brings a bit of solidarity and physicality to us”

“He’s adapting well and we’re really pleased with him, so fingers crossed he’ll go from strength to strength and he’ll play a big part in us going forward.”

John Sergeant signed for the club at the end of October but wasn’t able to play straight away due to international clearance.

The 22-year-old is versatile and can play in defence or midfield which will benefit the club as the team released Saul Henderson, Samuel Parr and Jordan Poole from the club in October also.

Sergeant may only be in his early twenties but has shown huge senior potential after earning himself 11 caps for his country breaking the record of the youngest player ever to be capped by Gibraltar.

John Sergeant said, “It’s a bit colder here but it’s just been great and I’m getting back to full match fitness.

“I had a bit of a problem with an injury last year so I’m just catching up but once I’m back fully I hope to be able to rub off on the other players and help as much as I can.

“I want us [West Didsbury and Chorlton] to climb up the table as quickly as we can and get back to winning ways.

“I’m still quite young but I give my best every time I play so hopefully it helps the team out.”

West Didsbury and Chorlton FC will next face Hanley Town on Saturday 9th December for their next North West Counties Football League fixture.
