MediaCityUK is currently fundraising for a target of £500 in order to plant 500 trees around Salford in celebration of sustainability week.

A ‘Just Giving’ page has been set up in honour of the campaign to raise funds, the money will go towards planting 500 saplings during National Tree Week commencing November 24th. So far the project has raised £250 and plans for upcoming fundraising events hope to encourage the local community to get involved.

Plans for the campaign came into shape when the BBC reached out to Salford’s City of Trees organisation regarding an idea to launch their sustainability season. Sian Day, City of Trees Fundraising Manager, said:

“Rather than just doing the BBC to get them involved in the tree planting project for sustainability season, lets open it out and get the whole of MediaCity involved and make it something really big and exciting.”

The aim of the campaign is to leave a lasting green legacy for MediaCityUK, this will benefit local residents and the environment by creating more green space around Salford amid the concrete walls.

The City of Trees organisation works to re-invigorate landscapes around Greater manchester, transforming unused and neglected woodland with an aim to plant a tree for every man, woman and child within a generation.

A key role within the charity is to connect communities to nature and the ‘Citizen Forester’ application allows local residents to get involved with the charity and volunteer for tree planting. Sian said: “whenever we’re doing any of our tree planting projects we would try and do that with community engagement.”

As an environmental charity, City of Trees was set up in the early 90’s under the name Red Rose Forest. The organisation is part of a wider charity called Community Forest Trust who work around England to transform, strengthen and enhance communities through tree planting.
